Ballet Dance Classes

The workshop is an ideal introduction to the world of classical and modern ballet, starting with a brief history of how ballet evolved as the highest form of dance. Each participant will explore mime and improvisation, body rhythms and dance movements for both classical and modern ballet. No ballet experience is needed. Wear comfortable shoes, bring snacks and good humor. The workshop is open to both girls and boys ages 3 and older. The workshop will be conducted by Linda Brinkler.

If you are relatively new to the Episcopal Church or would just like to learn more about how we pray, learn, give, and work together as Episcopalians, please plan to attend a four week Explorers' Class August 9, 16, 23 and 30, from 10:30 to 12:30. Brunch is included. After attending this series, you will be able to choose, if you feel called, to be confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church later in the fall. If you will be away for some or all of those weeks, call Mother Mary at the office and we will work something out. Every baptized person is called to ministry. The Education for Ministry program provides people from all walks of life with the education "to be" Christians and to carry out their ministries. All Christians need a Christian education which supports their faith and which prepares them to express that faith in day to day events.

EFM is a worldwide program developed by the School of Theology of The University of the South. It holds before us that the foundation for bringing Christ to the world lied in a church empowered by an active, theologically articulate laity.

Thousasnds of persons have completed this four-year program. Students enroll one year at a tiume, can transfer almost anywhere in the U.S.A. and in many foreign countries and can obtain 18 Continuing Education Units per year by participating. We will use Richard Niebuhr's book, Christ and Culture, as a jumping-off place for a conversation about how our Christian faith compels us to interact with the wider culture. The format for our classes will be lecture, panel conversation, and discussion. Our guest facilitator and lecturer for several of these sessions will be the Rev. Dr. John Gunnemann. Professor Gunnemann is Professor Emeritus of Social Ethics at Candler School of Theology and the Graduate Division of Religion at Emory University. His teaching and writing have been on a wide range of topics, the history of Christian Ethics, issues of war, the ethics of Calvinism, business ethics, and political and economic ethics. His most recent work has focused on the intersections of theology, ethics, and economic life. Prof. Gunnemann will be joined in this series by Ted Hackett, Byron Tindall, and Mary Johnson. Books will be available for purchase for $13.00

STUDY OF EPHESIANS: We are the Church! Studying the New Testament Letter to the Ephesians will help us understand what that means. Our view of who we are as the Church is often limited. In this letter, we see, laid out with clarity and precision, a
definition of the Church that is as timely today as it was in the First Century of the Common Era.

A major reason for studying the Bible is to be transformed and equipped as God's Spirit uses these old, but still living words to guide us. Frequently on Sunday mornings we say: "And now Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do..." Our understanding
of our salvation in Christ needs to be accompanied by an understanding of our ministry in Christ. Studying Ephesians will cause us to be amazed at the magnificence of God's goodness in his plans for us as well as helping us grasp that we are members of an exciting, dynamic, spiritually strong body of Christ.

Walking faithfully with the Lord offers more rewards than any "Amazing Race" or other Reality TV challenge. Ephesians challenges us to continue the ministry of God's Son, depending confidently on the power he gives us through the Holy Spirit. Want to be more than a "Survivor"? Want to avoid being "Wiped Out" on waves of apathy? Want to be enabled to do the work Christ has given you to do? Come and study with us. We will be studying in a way that will bring heart and mind together.

As Holy Family parishioners do the important work of articulating our understanding of God's Vision for us and planning strategically to accomplish that vision, we all will benefit from having a firm grasp on the foundational benchmark of a thriving church as articulated in the Letter to the Ephesians. This is so important that we are providing TWO times when you may join us in this study:

Heart for Honduras Art Auction

The date for the Hearts for Honduras Art Auction is one week after our own Heart and Soul fund raiser for local charities, Saturday, October 24th. Please support Heart and Soul with your usual enthusiasm. Then join us at St David�s for a wonderful evening of fun and art and support those in need in Honduras. We do not
want to lessen our impact in Pickens County in any way, AND we want to extend our love and support to those children in need in a wider setting. We are blessed in so many ways. Let�s answer Christ�s call to go into all the world to be His willing hands wherever we see the need. Please see Katharine Armentrout or Leamarie True for tickets or other information. Also, please see the display of Honduran crafts in the Parish
Hall after church to sample some of the fine crafts available at St David�s October 24th. The auction supports the Honduras mission efforts of Episcopal parishes in the Atlanta area for the LAMB (Latin American Missionary Bible) Institute in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Members of churches including St. David's, St. Aidan's, St. Peter & St. Paul, St. Clement's and Holy Family work to alleviate poverty and improve the living conditions of Honduran children and families though a Residential Children's Home, a day care and school, and a Community Assistance Program run by the LAMB Institute. The festive evening will include a new activity of wine tasting! In addition will be the Live Auction by ArtSouth featuring original artworks from famous and local artists, and a Silent Auction of handmade Honduran crafts, vacations and other unique items. There will be live music, a raffle and exciting door prizes. Tickets are $20 for one and $35 per couple, which includes hors d'oeuvres and beverages. Raffle tickets are $5 each. They plan to cook barbecue the night of 12/18 and have it packaged and ready for you to pickup after both church services on Sunday, 12/20. Each plate (zip-lock bag) contains 1-11/4 lbs. of meat and costs $8.00. It freezes beautifully! Please order in advance so we will know how much to prepare. On Thursday, February 4 the Family Diner moves to a new location. In order to prepare for serving meals in our new location, we will have a meeting of all the folks who work for the Diner on Monday, January 25th at 6:00pm at the Georgia Mountains
Hospice dining room. Turn off Church Street (Highway 53) as if you were going to Good Samaritan, and make the first left turn - onto Caring Way. The Hospice building is the last building on the right - across from Crescent Bank. We will take a tour of the
kitchen and dining room and go over any new procedures for the teams. We hope the meeting will be short and that you will be on your way by 6:30 or 6:45. Team Captains: If you cannot make the meeting yourself, would you please designate someone from your team to be your official representative. We want to make certain that all the teams have someone at the meeting, so everyone will feel comfortable when it is their turn to do a meal.

On Thursday, February 4 the Family Diner moves to a new location!! We will offer our weekly dinner to the community in the large and friendly dining room at the Georgia Mountains Hospice, located right near Good Samaritan, the Thrift Store and CARES. It is our hope that the new location will be easier, more convenient and inviting to those who would like to share a meal with us. It is our prayer that the move will mean more folks coming in the door. The hours of the Diner will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm; the new hours are also designed to make the Diner more appealing to families. Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord's passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting...I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's Holy Word. Thus begins our Ash Wednesday liturgy which is found at page 264 of the Book of Common Prayer. Our Ash Wednesday services, which are at 12 noon and 7:00 pm, are a solemn, prayerful time when we gather to begin our Lenten journey. Join us at one of these services to make a �right beginning� of this important and powerful season of Lent.

Lenten Series on the Resurrection

On Wednesday evenings, Dr. Steven Kraftchick, Associate Professor of the Practice of New Testament Interpretation and the Director of General and Advance Studies at the Candler School of Theology, Emory University, will lead a five-part Lenten study series on the meaning of the resurrection, as communicated by the writers of each of our New Testament Gospels and by St. Paul. Dr. Kraftchick, an exciting speaker who was with us last year at one of our Lenten suppers, will bring his scholarly insight and prayerful understanding to the examination of the resurrection. He will help us understand the unique, rich and powerful theology that each of these writings contains. His talks are designed to broaden our understanding of this central event in our faith and enrich our faith journey. The series will be on Wednesday evenings at 5:30 pm with a light soup and sandwich supper, continues with a lecture by Dr. Kraftchick and ends with Compline (our short service of prayer at the end of the day). There is no charge to attend this series, but you will have an opportunity to leave a freewill offering. The series begins February 24th , and continues on March 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th. Please join us for this rich opportunity to deepen our knowledge and our faith.

Welcome Hands Quilters

We have a new time but will still be in the same place. Welcome Hands Quilters will be meeting on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month starting on April 8. We will still meet at 1:30- 4:30 PM in the conference building. We are still working on quilts for the Goshen Valley Boys Ranch and have three ready to go as soon as we attach the labels. We are using a new pattern that is very easy to do so if you are thinking that you might want to learn to quilt, this project would be a good starting point. We have a delightful time during our meetings and also take frequent field trips. The next big one will be in May for the shop hop. That is a full day of fun!
